We believe that work is ordained by God, not merely to meet our material needs, but also to express who he has created us to be. God is loving, compassionate, holy and creative, and has made all people in His image. Our mission is to help hurting, alienated and marginalized people rise above their barriers to discover this gift from God. Our deep desire is that as we discover, through meaningful work, all that God has created us to be, that we will reflect His image.
We know and believe that work is intended to have meaning, an opportunity to discover and express who God has created us to be. Without this healthy sense of self, one cannot experience or participate in community. Our experience in the inner city, trying to nurture community among some very broken and disenfranchised people, has led us to understand that because of barriers many may never find meaningful work. Therefore, Sanctuary is dedicated to offering a supportive environment designed to help people overcome these barriers.
In our woodshop, we deliver job and life skills training within a meaningful business setting. The business activity, while real, is not the primary goal. We are not trying to train people to become wood-workers or carpenters; rather, we are teaching them how to find themselves through the process of work. The business activity is vital in that it serves to make the experience meaningful. The act of making something is in and of itself satisfying; but when someone comes along and embraces that product, its value is affirmed. When a customer purchases a product there is a transfer of value. It is at that moment that the worker realizes that they themselves are valuable.
Sanctuary’s Employment Training program is meant for those who have already begun to embrace community. The need to embrace meaningful work rather than the tendency to be under-employed in some meaningless day job often represents a deep personal need to be embraced. This deep need to belong is often the result of a lifelong experience of poverty rather than simply needing a job. In a Leviticus 25 "jubilee way" we need to restore this opportunity to discover a healthy sense of themselves through meaningful work. At the very core of our strategy is an organizational structure and commitment to a mentoring / discipling style of work environment. Our true goal, by combining the opportunity to walk together and work together, is to create the ultimate experience of community,"The Family of God".
